Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are essential to the mission of Friends of Noxubee Refuge and the Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge. As federal budgets shrink, support groups become more important in helping to protect our natural treasures for the benefit of present and future generations. Members of Friends of Noxubee are involved, at varying degrees, in a variety of activities consistent with the protection and preservation of the environment. Download a volunteer log here.

Saturdays at the Refuge
Educational programs are scheduled every FIRST and THIRD Saturday of each month.
Trail Walkers
Volunteers walk each of Noxubee's eleven (11) trails at least once a month, clearing them of trash and alerting the refuge staff to maintenance issues. Read about each of the 11 trails here. Also check out the virtual trails at http://130.18.140.19/noxubee
Noxubee Native Garden
A garden of plants native to the area is maintained in front of the Visitor Center. Plants are labeled for easy identification.
Junior Ranger Program

The Junior Ranger Program provides young people with conservation information, environmental education and recreation. After successfully completing six activities, the youth is named a Junior Refuge Ranger and receives a certificate and award.
Amateur Nature Photography Contest

An amateur photography contest is conducted annually. Wildlife and scenic photos taken within the confines of Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge and within the dates of the current year's contest are judged in four categories. All entries are displayed for several weeks at the Noxubee Refuge Visitor Center. Complete rules and entry forms are available, simply click on the specific item.
Fishing Derby
Volunteers assist the refuge staff in staging a Fishing Derby for youth 5-15 years old. Accompanied by an adult, the youth fish in ponds stocked with catfish and used exclusively for special recreational fishing events.
Adopt a Highway
Volunteers pick up trash four times each year along a portion of Highway 25 that runs through the western portion of Noxubee Refuge.
Noxubee Notes
Noxubee Notes is the Friend's quarterly newsletter, which is edited, published and distributed by Volunteers. More information and online copies of the newsletter are available here.
